Lula flies to Canada to attend G7 Summit

The event will take place in the city of Kananaskis on June 17

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio da Silva will travel to Canada next week to take part in the G7 Summit—a group made up of the world’s seven largest economies. In a phone call Wednesday (Jun. 11), Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney formally invited the Brazilian to the event, which will take place in the city of Kananaskis on June 17.

“[President Lula] expressed his gratitude and accepted the invitation, noting the positive contribution that Brazil can offer to the topics to be debated at the event—including energy security, critical minerals, financing, innovation and technology, and artificial intelligence,” the president’s office said in a statement.

Brazil will take part in the extended session of the summit, along with six other invited countries. The main summit will be attended by the member countries—the US, Italy, , the United Kingdom, Japan, Canada and .

The Brazilian and Canadian presidents will also meet bilaterally on the sidelines of the G7 Summit.

President Lula, on his part, invited the prime minister to take part in the 30th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP30), which will take place in Belém, Pará, in November, “recalling the Canadian head of government’s experience in the area of climate finance.” According to the note, the prime minister praised Brazilian leader and confirmed his presence at the event.

“Both also discussed the potential for strengthening bilateral relations, highlighting the convergence between Brazil and Canada in the defense of democracy, multilateralism, and free trade,” the statement goes on to read.

During his term in office, President Lula was invited to and attended all G7 Summits—in Japan in 2023 and in Italy in 2024.
